Is Your Pool Actually Leaking? How to Tell
The standard method for separating evaporative water loss from genuine leakage is the bucket test. Fill a bucket with pool water, place it on a pool step at water level, and mark both the inside water surface and the pool water surface. Leave both exposed to the same conditions for 24 to 48 hours without running the circulation system. If the pool has dropped noticeably more than the bucket, the difference is leakage, not evaporation.
In Dubai's summer months, an uncovered outdoor pool can lose fifteen to twenty-five millimetres of depth per day to evaporation alone during the hottest periods. A pool dropping more than this consistently, or continuing to drop at night when temperatures fall and evaporation slows significantly, has a leak that needs finding.
If the pool holds its level better when the circulation system is switched off than when it's running, the leak is likely in the pressurized pipework rather than the shell. If the level drops the same either way, a shell crack or fitting failure is more probable.

Where Pool Leaks Come From
The Pool Shell
The shell is the waterproof container of the pool: concrete, fibreglass, or vinyl depending on construction type. Hairline cracks in the plaster or concrete, failed expansion joints between the shell and coping tiles, and delamination at the waterline tile bond are all common failure points. Dye testing identifies these faults directly: a small amount of dye introduced near a suspected area moves toward the crack if one is present, since the current created by escaping water draws the dye through.
Skimmer and Return Fitting Connections
Every fitting that penetrates the pool shell, skimmer throats, return jet bodies, main drain covers, and light fittings, is a potential leak point. These fittings are sealed with a mechanical gasket and backing plate, or with epoxy putty on older installations. Both seal types deteriorate with age and with the continuous chemistry cycling of pool water. Pressure testing of individual fitting penetrations quickly identifies which ones aren't holding.
Underground Return Lines
Pool water circulates through underground HDPE or PVC pipework running between the pool shell fittings and the pump, filter, and heater in the plant room. These underground lines can develop fractures from ground movement, thermal stress, or physical damage. A leaking underground return line is entirely invisible from the pool surface, confirmed by pressure testing and located by acoustic detection before any excavation begins.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Commercial pools run continuously, filtration cycling around the clock rather than the intermittent operation typical of a residential pool, and backwash cycles alone account for water loss that has to be distinguished from an actual leak before any diagnosis makes sense.
